Poll: Prom King and Queen

2010年 5月 27日

So we had a little bit of a “prom court” on Tsuki no Ai. I thought it would be fun to host a shallow popularity contest, so here are the results.

Queen

Namie Amuro- 9 votes, 41%
BENI- 3 votes, 14%
Kanon Wakeshima- 3 votes, 14%
YUI- 2 votes 9%
Yuna Ito- ”
Ami Suzuki- ”
Ai Otsuka- 1 vote, 5%

I figured Namie would win… after all, she is the REAL queen of J-pop! I think I would vote for Kanon… she is releasing a new album this July!!

Now for King results… I was pretty surprised with this outcome actually…

King
Hero (DBSK)- 10 votes, 48%
HYDE (L’arc~en~Ciel)- 4 votes, 19%
Ruki (the GazettE)- 2 votes, 10%
Keita Tachibana (w-inds.)- 2 votes, 10%
Gackt- 1 vote, 5%
Jun Matsumoto- ”
Yuya Matsushita- Lex (okay I’m guessing on this, but I’m pretty sure it was he)
K- 0 votes =[

I did not expect Hero to win at all… didn’t expect there to be that many DBSK fan(girls) that read my blog. THEY’RE JUST ON HIATUS THEY’RE JUST ON HIATUS. I thought HYDE would win, even though he’s a bit old for prom king  =p. I would have voted for Ruki… there’s my boy!

So… that was fun. In the meantime be sure to vote in the new poll and check out our formspring!

Poll: Summer’s coming, what do you do?

2010年 5月 16日

It’s been a while since I’ve made a post… I’ve been very busy with school. Thankfully I graduate this week so I’ll be back in business. This surely means summer is almost here! Personally I can’t wait for the beaches, warm weather, and cool breezes. So how will you all be celebrating everyone’s favorite time of the year?

Blast some high-energy Koda Kumi, Ayumi Hamasaki, or MiChi!- 7 votes, 37%
-seems like more of you prefer those upbeat, happy-go-lucky works of some of Japan’s most popular artists. My recommendations? Bluebird (Hamasaki), Lick Me (Koda), Why Oh Why (MiChi).

Chill out with some ethereal stuff like Utada Hikaru or salyu- 4 votes, 21%
-This stuff is great for nighttime, or when it’s just too damn hot to want anything else.
My recommendations? Beautiful World (Utada), Kairo (Utada), L.A.F.S. (salyu)

Go clubbing at night with Ami Suzuki, Perfume, or MEG ;)- 4 votes, 21%
-Apparently a few of you like the night life of summer! Hey, who could hate these queens of electropop?
My recommendations? FREE FREE (Suzuki), Edge ⊿-mix (perfume), WHY (MEG)

Imagine at the beach by listening to some Yuna Ito- 2 votes, 11%
-This would have been my choice. I love the laid-back atmosphere of her songs, especially when she lets her Hawaiian self shine through.
My recommendations? Mahaloha, miss you, BREEEEEZIN!!!!!!!

Concert hopping! Hitting every jrock concert in sight (or so I wish…)- 2 votes, 11%
-This would have been my second choice. I would love to go to Japan and see as many jrock artists as possible!
Who’s on tour? Sadie, alice nine., nightmare (not a tour, but Budokan in August!!)

So aside from music, does anyone have any cool plans for summer??

Best of 2009: singles

2009年 12月 31日

Well I haven’t been reviewing on account of I’ve been on vacation =]. Anyway, now that I’m back and Kowezhi has decided to go party without me (<_<) I’ll spend my New Year’s Eve writing “best of”s. I’ll do singles holistically. I may add a category for b-sides or album-only tracks. None of them are in any particular order… just whatever comes to my mind. Also, no commentary since that would take way too long. Feel free to comment if you agree/disagree. It’s quite possible that I forgot some of the best. Mouse over the album pics to see the name of the artist/single.

Singles

Alright I really wanted this to be a “top 10” sort of deal… but 11 never hurt anyone =] If I *had* to pick a “number 1” I’d have to go with alan’s Kuon no Kawa. I mean come on.. that thing is EPIC (even if it rehashes the same two songs over and over). Also, even though I gave some singles better reviews than others I gave my top 10 based on musicianship, not necessarily the rating I gave. For example, although I enjoyed Miho Fukuhara’s Nande Nakitaku Nacchaun Darou tremendously, Hanabi Sky was clearly a more musical feat.

Honorable Mentions
Kana Nishino- Dear…/MAYBE
Onitsuka Chihiro- X/Last Melody
Lil’B- Tsunaida Te
Mika Nakshima- Overload
Salyu- Corteo ~Gyouretsu~
BoA- Eien

Yuna Ito- Let it Go

2009年 11月 14日

I think this is a pretty cover (much better than the regular edition cover). I think she’s made prettier ones before though ._.

Okay… so this is the first single from Yuna Ito since her Dream album. Let it Go has an acoustic vibe to it, similar to the one in Mahaloha (just look at the PV). I’m not quite sure what to think of the melody right now. One blogger called it “Western,” but I disagree with that. Although it’s not a distinct Asian melody I definitely wouldn’t say it’s completely Western. Hybrid? The chorus is definitely the highlight of the single. It combines acoustic guitar, strings, and Yuna Ito’s glowing vocals. Very catchy song with a folksy vibe.

Alright.. now for the b-side, Happy Days. When I heard the title of the song my first instinct was to think of Ai Otsuka’s peppy song. Yuna’s song though is quite the opposite. Happy Days also sounds a bit different from Yuna Ito. It’s got a more pop vibe than the a-side, but it’s much slower and maintains use of the acoustic guitar. It’s a pretty song and its lyrics remind me of the ones from Journey. This is one of Yuna’s best b-sides in a long time. It’s a far cry from Brand New World.

Overall: It’s a different feeling from Yuna, but that’s in no way a bad thing! She’s slowed things down a bit, and in my opinion it’s a great way to start of a new era. Also, I’d recommend listening to the instrumentals… the orchestration for the single is well done.

Rating: 8.5/10

Track list:

1. LET IT GO
2. HAPPY DAYS
3. LET IT GO(INSTRUMENTAL)
4. HAPPY DAYS(INSTRUMENTAL)
