MiChi x the telephones

2010年 7月 6日

Carol never wore her safety goggles… now she doesn’t need them. Be safe in the chem lab!

The MadNesS continues with WoNdeR WomaN, a collaboration between MiChi and the telephones. This song is actually pretty good I think because of the great energy throughout the whole thing. This song takes a more rock approach as opposed to merely electronic music. MiChi is definitely focused on maintaining intensity instead of watching her vocals (which is okay in this case). The only part that bothered me a little was the chorus; MiChi’s vocals were fine, but those from the telephones were a little unsteady.

Next is Strong MAN, another up-beat rock song. I feel like this song is much more of MiChi’s style than the a-side. It’s a little more toned down, which leads to a little bit more control in both vocals and instrumentals. What’s nice is that even though the rock is present, you still get a little bit of synth here and then.

WoNdeR WomaN T.O.M. remix is definitely more of an electronic song. There’s tons of distortion in the vocals (which actually minimizes the intonation problems of the original song). I think it’s a pretty good remix, but I don’t think it’s better than the original.

Overall: I was please with this single because of the way it makes you want to move!

Rating: 8/10

MiChi- All about the Girls ~Iijanka Party People~/Together Again

2010年 4月 21日

Ahh really weird cover MiChi… it makes more sense once you’ve seen the PV.

I would just like to say that this is MiChi’s BEST single to date. Originally I was NOT a MiChi fan. I wasn’t too into the electronic stuff and thought her singing in Japanese was a little sloppy, but she has since become one of my favorite artists. Anyway, I am honored to write a review for such a stellar single. All about the girls ~Iijanka Party People~ is the most unique song in MiChi repertoire. It’s a mix of electronica , dance, pop, and a little bit of scatting. This song is highly infectous and catchy. Also, the upbeat rhythm makes this song great for dancing. This song has been arranged and performed exquisitely.

The second A-side, Together again takes things down a notch in terms of tempo. The plucking strings and laid-back rhythm give this song an Asian feel to it. Also, this song has a heartfelt quality to it, similar to that of YOU.  Although I still wouldn’t say that MiChi has fully developed a “ballad” voice quite yet, this is certainly a way to integrate her way into slower songs.

With a title like dance DANCE! you’d expect some sort of house mix, right? That’s not the case with this song. Although not laid-back, the song has a much heavier beat, preventing it from becoming another All about the Girls. This song is a nice blend of acoustic and electronic instrumentals.

Overall: I’ve got the MadNesS for this single! Quite possibly the best single (IMO) we’ve seen in 2010 so far.

Best of 2009: B-sides and other stuff

2010年 1月 3日

Here’s the 3rd part to my 5-part “Best of 2009” installment! This time I’m focusing on B-sides and album-only tracks.  There are a couple more bonus categories I didn’t know where else to put (best collaboration and such). Again, nothing is in any particular order.

  • Gunjou no Tani (acoustic ver.)- alan (Gunjou no Tani)
  • SYOUKUBENI (shot in one take)– Dir en grey (Hageshisa to, Kono Mune no Naka de Karamitsuita Shakunetsu no Yami)
  • mute– Mihimaru GT (Torokechau Dandy)
  • Pied Piper– Plastic Tree (Sanatorium)
  • I– salyu (extension)
  • KISSES– stephanie. (Pride ~a part of me~)

  • Shiroki Yuu Utsu- the GazettE (DIM)
  • suki– Rie fu (Urban Romantic)
  • Akizakura (cosmos)– Ikimono Gakari (Hajimari no Uta)
  • Driving– Koda Kumi (Trick)
  • Drella– alice nine. (Vandalize)
  • COPY THAT– Namie Amuro (Past<Future)

There were a number of new artists this year… but as the title suggests I’ve only considered the artists who had the strongest debuts (I chose 5). I don’t consider artists like alan to be “new artists” since her work was well known way before her debut album. Artists like Mao Denda (who apparently released stuff about 9 years ago) are eligible because they made themselves known in 2009.  It’s a bit confusing, but it makes sense in my mind ._.

  • JASMINE
  • MiChi
  • Kana Nishino
  • Kizuki Minami
  • Lil’ B

Those where my three “main” categories. Here are the other ones (basically I was just too lazy to make graphics for categories with only one or two winners).

Best Collaboration: Ima Demo Aitai Yo– Yuna Ito feat. Spontania

Best Revival: UnsraW
Best appearance on anime: Again– YUI
Best Instrumental/Interlude: —anten.– Plastic Tree, Tenyou ~Interlude~– alan, INTRODUCTION FOR TRICK– Koda Kumi
Best Remix: romantic (strings ver.)– Rie fu, Days 8-bits of tears YMCK remix– Ayumi Hamasaki
